“Kagami Biraki” is a traditional Japanese ceremony that takes place in early January, usually after the New Year celebrations. The main focus is the breaking and eating of “kagami mochi” (a special rice cake) that has been displayed as an offering to the New Year gods. The act of breaking the mochi symbolizes welcoming good fortune and health for the coming year. The mochi is usually cracked open with a hammer, and then it is eaten, often in soup or with other ingredients. This ceremony is seen as a way to gain the blessings of the New Year’s deity and bring good luck for the year ahead.”
